What We Teach

Specialist test preparation across the exams that decide what comes next.

Eleven focused programs covering the tests our families most often face, from school admissions through graduate school. Every program is calibrated to each student's diagnostic gaps, target test date, and starting level.

Why Harland

A clear curriculum spine, content-based teaching, and a focus on lasting mastery.

No. 01

A curriculum spine of US Common Core

Every Harland program is built on the US Common Core standards, with clear pathways into IB, AP, IELTS, and SAT preparation as students are ready. Each lesson connects to the assignments and assessments your child is preparing for at school.

No. 02

Content-based learning

Harland's pedagogy is content-based learning. Test-day performance grows from real command of the underlying material, not from endless practice tests alone. Students build the skills the exam measures while genuinely learning the content.

No. 03

Mastery-based, working toward our own redundancy

We measure success by how soon a student no longer needs us. The program brings each student to the point where their school's curriculum becomes the right challenge, and once they are there, many families step their cadence down or move on. We treat that as the right outcome.

From the Principal

A note from Mr. Harris.

Most families come to Harland looking for a third option. They want something distinct from a crowded classroom of thirty, yet far more structured and rigorous than a typical home tutor. They are looking for truly personalized learning with transparent, constant growth and a clear, defined end date.

When I founded Harland, my goal was to build the exact organization I would want for my own family. That meant bringing together subject-specialist faculty who embody the same growth mindset we aim to instill in our students. It meant designing a curriculum rooted in the actual academic courses students are navigating, rather than generic language exercises. Above all, it meant treating families as true educational partners, and students as the ultimate drivers of their own intellectual journeys.

We are intentionally honest about alignment during our admissions process because Harland is not the right fit for every family. But for the families we are right for, one of my greatest joys is receiving that phone call from a parent telling me their child no longer needs us. Independent success is the outcome we work toward from the very first lesson.

Common Questions

Common questions about Harland's test preparation.

Honest answers to the questions parents and students ask most often before working with Harland.

Which tests do you prepare students for?
We prepare students for the major tests our families need: SAT and ACT for US college admissions; SSAT, ISEE, MAP, and WIDA for school admissions and placement; IELTS, TOEFL, and Cambridge YLE for English proficiency; and GRE and GMAT for graduate school applications. Each program is calibrated to the student's diagnostic gaps, target test date, and starting level.
Is Harland for students who are already strong, or for students who need support?
Both. Harland is built for students who want to do serious work, whether they are already excelling and aiming higher, or building foundations to keep up with the demands of an international school curriculum. The common thread is mastery: we teach until students genuinely understand the material, not just until they can pass a test.
Can students begin Harland test prep over the summer?
Yes. Summer is one of our most productive windows for test preparation. Students often use 4 to 8 weeks over summer to build the diagnostic-driven foundation that the school year then refines through ongoing practice. Adult applicants on tight MBA or graduate-school timelines often use summer to compress months of preparation into focused weeks. Each program adjusts cadence to your timeline and target test date. See Summer Enrollment for full details.
How are tutors matched, and what if it isn't right?
We match tutors based on the student's specific course needs and personality fit, drawing on what we learn during the consultation and assessment class. If the match isn't right after the first few sessions, you can request a switch with no fuss. Our priority is the relationship, not the assignment.
How will we know what's happening in lessons?
You receive structured updates throughout the term: post-lesson notes, unit progress reports, and direct communication with your teacher and our team. Every Harland student works with a Student Coordinator as their primary point of contact (or as the family's contact for younger learners), so you always know where things stand.
How is Harland different from other test preparation in Taipei?
Harland teaches test preparation the same way we teach academic subjects: through mastery, not cramming. Students work with specialist faculty who teach one or two tests deeply, not generalists rotating across many. Our curriculum tracks current test formats, including the Digital SAT and recent ACT updates. Before recommending a program, we run an assessment so we can see how you work and where to start.
Do you teach the new Digital SAT?
Yes. Our SAT curriculum follows the Digital SAT format introduced in 2024, including section-adaptive testing, on-screen tools, and the current question types. Mr. Glen leads our SAT program and has updated the curriculum to match the most recent changes.
Can students work with Harland on multiple subjects?
Yes, and many students do. Harland's subject-specialist faculty model means students often combine Test Preparation with English and Writing, Mathematics and Science, or other Harland programs at the same time. For adult applicants, this often means combining test prep with Business English or Professional Writing through our Adult Professional hub. Your Student Coordinator helps coordinate scheduling, share context across teachers, and keep you informed of progress in each area.
How much do lessons typically cost?
Fees vary by subject and course level. During the consultation, your Student Coordinator helps you choose a program that fits both your goals and your family's situation. Most Harland families stay with us for years. Once you see how mastery-based learning works in practice, the cost difference from budget providers stops feeling like the right comparison.

  2. 02

    The Assessment

The student sits a 1-on-1 assessment class with one of our teachers. This determines course suitability and the right entry point within that course.

  3. 03

    The Match

Based on the consultation and assessment, we recommend a specific course, an entry point within it, and a faculty member matched to the student's needs.

    The Work Begins

Sessions begin at our Taipei office or online. We review progress at regular intervals and adjust the plan as the student progresses.
