Why Harland

A clear curriculum, content-based teaching, and a focus on independent mastery.

No. 01

A clear, structured curriculum

Every program is built around a clear curriculum and structured, measurable progression toward your goals, whether that is fluency, a professional milestone, or an exam. You always know where you are and what comes next.

No. 02

Content-based learning

Harland's pedagogy is content-based learning. English fluency and professional communication develop through the substance you engage with, not through isolated exercises. You build real ability while working with material that matters to your goals.

No. 03

Mastery-based, working toward our own redundancy

We measure success by how soon you no longer need us. We bring each learner to the point where they can carry on independently, and many step their cadence down or move on. We treat that as the right outcome.

From the Principal

A note from Mr. Harris.

Many adults come to Harland looking for a third option. They want something distinct from a crowded classroom, yet far more structured and rigorous than a typical tutor. They are looking for truly personalized learning with transparent, constant growth and a clear, defined end date.

When I founded Harland, my goal was to build the exact organization I would want for myself and my own family. That meant bringing together subject-specialist faculty who embody the same growth mindset we aim to instill in our learners. It meant designing a curriculum rooted in each learner's actual goals, rather than generic language exercises. Above all, it meant treating learners as true partners and the ultimate drivers of their own progress.

We are intentionally honest about alignment during our admissions process because Harland is not the right fit for everyone. But for the learners we are right for, one of my greatest joys is hearing that someone no longer needs us. Independent success is the outcome we work toward from the very first lesson.

Common Questions

Common questions about Harland's adult programs.

Honest answers to the questions adult learners and their families ask most often before working with Harland.

Which adult programs do you offer?
We offer five focused programs across three product directions. Three English programs for adult learners: Professional Communication for working professionals (workplace English, professional writing, speaking up in meetings and presentations), Conversation Confidence for spoken fluency development, and English Confidence for Parents specifically designed for parents of international school students. A project-scoped Executive Coaching line for senior leaders preparing for high-stakes situations in English. And an AI Fluency program (AI for Executives) building real leverage from AI tools for working adults and executives. Each program is matched to your starting level and your specific goals.
I'm a parent of an international school student. Is this for me?
Yes, and parents are one of our largest adult audiences. Many parents enroll because they want to read their child's school emails confidently, communicate with teachers at parent conferences, support homework conversations at home, or simply keep up with the English-language community their children are part of. Our English Confidence for Parents program is built specifically around these contexts. Conversation Confidence is also a popular starting point for parents who want spoken fluency without the formality of a business program.
I'm a beginner. Can I still work with Harland?
Yes. Many adult learners come to Harland as beginners or near-beginners, especially parents of international school students. Our methodology adapts to your starting level: we begin with what you can already do, build foundations carefully, and pace the work around your time and energy. You don't need to already be fluent to start. The consultation helps us understand where you are starting from so we can match the right teacher and program.
I am preparing for IELTS, TOEFL, or another English exam. Is that here or somewhere else?
Test preparation for adults sits on our Test Preparation hub rather than this one. IELTS, TOEFL, GRE, and GMAT preparation are taught by our specialist test-prep faculty across both adult and student audiences. Our Adult Learners hub focuses on English programs aimed at practical communication outcomes (workplace English, parent communication, conversation confidence, executive coaching) rather than exam preparation.
How are tutors matched, and what if it isn't right?
We match tutors based on your goal, starting level, and personality fit, drawing on what we learn during the consultation and assessment session. If the match isn't right after the first few sessions, you can request a switch with no fuss. Our priority is the relationship, not the assignment.
How does this work around my schedule?
Adult learners often have unpredictable schedules, and we accommodate that. Sessions can be booked around work and family commitments with reasonable flexibility, and we offer both in-person sessions in Taipei and online sessions for travel weeks or when convenience matters more than presence. Your Student Coordinator helps coordinate scheduling around your commitments.
Can my company sponsor or expense Harland fees for employees?
Yes. Many of our working-professional students enroll with company sponsorship or professional development budgets. We can issue invoices to your company directly, provide formal documentation for expense claims, and structure programs to meet HR or training department requirements. Discuss this with your Student Coordinator during consultation and we will accommodate where reasonable.
How much do lessons typically cost?
Fees vary by program and pathway complexity. During the consultation, your Student Coordinator helps you choose a program that fits both your goals and your situation. Once you see how mastery-based learning works in practice, the cost difference from generic English schools and conversation cafes stops feeling like the right comparison.
